Determining if a law firm is a right fit for an organization or an individual is not always easy. For many, success in a client / law firm relationship can be fleeting, so it is important to determine quickly if your organization is aligned with a firm, both in terms of style and functionality.
From the client perspective, most law firms have three basic attributes that they should consider: experience, attention to detail and flexibility. Particular to the current market, experience at mediation, arbitration or trial by highly sought after subject matter experts is extremely important to organizations and individuals. If particular litigation expertise is needed, is there a partner who can handle the technical nature of the litigation? Is there depth to the firm’s knowledge of the subject matter? Is it only one partner, or is the knowledge wider spread within the firm? Although some firms may have lawyers with particular experience in one area, like bankruptcy for example, there can be an entire department of lawyers working in one particular area, whether it is commercial, corporate or intellectual property litigation.
More and more firms are being asked how "focused" are their lawyers on a particular area of practice and what are their results. What are the statistics that prove their experience and expertise?
Soliciting references is also important, but rather probing the specific areas of expertise, it is necessary to go beyond the comfort of a referral and possibly take the time to meet directly with the firm’s reference and actually ask how their experience was. Did the attorneys give enough attention to the case? Were you billed appropriately for the work? How did the attorneys perform against the projected budget? All valid questions for which there should be realistic and comparable answers.

Do you envision that as a potential issue? Your gut should be feeling the same and you should be heading in the other direction.
